I am new to DNN.I want to add a new website.I used the Host>Portals link to add new portal. But it does not seem to get created.I have a folder "website1" which is set as a virtual directory in IIS.I have assumed that when i create a new portal the respective files and folders are created in this new directory. Please let me know if I am correct and where can i find resources on the same.

anujagaunekar,

Can you let us know what you observed that leads you to think the portal is not being created? I take it you are not automatically directed to the new portal?

If you are looking for the portal on the file system you should look in the website1\Portals\ directory for your new portal.  The "default" portal is zero. So you should see a 1, a 2, a 3 etc.....depending on how many you have created.

take care,

Ian

Thanks for your reply Ian...I have currently configured DNN on my local machine..So I use localhost. Now when i create a portal I have folders 0 and 6 under Website\Portals.There are only images in these folders. What I had done earlier was created a folder Website in D drive and added Website as a Virtual directory. The folder website has no files. When I was adding a portal i entered localhost/Website as Portal Alias and did not specify anything in the home directory. After clicking create portal it gave page not found. How does this portal function? Is a portal a seperate website altogether?

anujagaunekar,

Firstly, one DotNetNuke site (which is one IIS web site) can consist of many portals. The "create portal" functionality is intended to create new portals within the context of the current web site. (That is to say the same IIS site, the same file system, the same database..etc....)

However, if you want your new portal to be a separate "instance" (as it appears that you do) -- you would need to create a completely new DotNetNuke site.

If the intended functionality is to have two portals with different URLs -- you can still accomplish this within one DotNetNuke site using portal aliases.  As long as your IIS web site receives the request for that URL and the there is a matching portal alias -- there will be effectively no way to tell from the user's perspective that the two portals are hosted on the same site.

Does that clear things up? Let me know if you have any questions!

thanks,

Ian
