In what scenario are role groups used? We have various security roles but have not used rolegroups. Why exactly are then needed?

Thanks

One scenario where I've used role groups was when I did a site for a school. Each class had it's own usergroup, and the teachers of each subject each belonged to a usergroup. Then I grouped the groups into "Students" and "teachers". The advantage was that when giving the rights for pages and modules you can filter by role group and thus, if you have a large number of roles, it gets a bit easier.

Obviously, if all you have are the standard roles (admin, registered users, subscribers) then you needn't bother with role groups. But they do help when you've got a large number of roles.
