Please forgive what may be a really simple question/answer, but we all have to start somewhere right!

I have a skin that has two panes horizontally placed. In the left pane I have text and in the right pane I have a slideshow control. Currently there's no space between the text and the slideshow. Can anyone tell me the best way to create some space?

I can't see a way to do this in the settings of DNN for the page, but if it's there, please enlighten me. Failing that, Is the best/only way to do this to create a borderless table in one of the panes and create an empty column to provide the spacing that I need?

Any help or advice you can give will be gratefully received!

Regards,  Sean

Hi Sean,

There are many ways to achieve it, but basically you'll need to insert some padding, cellspacing, or a margin, either in the panes or your container/s.

I would normally provide each content pane in the skin with its own CSS class. Then I would pad the panes in the style sheet as required. You cna of course just pad the one side of one pane to create the gap you need... "padding-right:8px"  that sort of thing.

Or you could just hard-code the padding straight into your skin.ascx and not use the style sheet. It really doesn't matter unless you think it will need to be restyled on the fly.

Does that make sense?

Rob

Hi Rob,

Many thanks for the reply! This has led me to be able to at least edit the content in the container and add a DIV, to which I can add the padding-right in the style. So, effectively I've got what I need now to be able to pad so thanks very much.

From your reply though, I'm trying to understand a little more about the CSS files that are in DNN and how I can make the changes there. I can't seem to find the documentation that I need. Basically, I have bought a new skin and I can see that there is a "default.css" file in the images directory for the skin after I have uploaded it to the appropriate Site folder. But, I can't see any way (either in the Host pages or the Admin pages) to actually edit/change the values that are in this CSS file.

Am I missing something here? If I use the Skin Designer in the Host->Skins panel, I can't seem to access the settings that I want to change, and using the Stylesheet  editor under Admin->Site Settings only gives me a basic "CSS Styles for DotNetNuke" file that I can change, which I assume would be overriden by the CSS file supplied with the skin.

All a bit confusing, and the upshot is that at the moment, I'd need to add the DIV to each and every container as I can't seem to find where I should be applying the CSS change I need.

Again, thanks for the help and I hope that you (or indeed anyone else) can just help me to understand this a bit better (or at least point me in the direction of the documentation I clearly can't find)

Regards, Sean

PS. I realise that this is probably now more appropriate to be in the Skinning forum, but I'm not sure if I can move the thread now...

Sean

Hi Sean,

I haven't been getting notifications from the forum so am just going through old posts to see if I missed anything.

Skinning can be a nightmare.. it's certainly a steep learning curve only made less so with each additional technology you become familiar with.

From your post it sounds like you might not have full access to all files on your server? If you don't have full access then it will be more difficult. Whilst you can tweak the appearance of your skin via the DNN interface, it is not how you should go about making fundamental changes. There is a css cascade in DNN.. default.css, skin.css, portal.css and then module.css for each module that has one. The css on the admin page lets you add bits to the portal.css which can override the default and skin.css.. but again, that is not the place to work on your skin.

So..

  • do you have full access to the server,
  • do you have a good editor like Dreamweaver or Frontpage or Expression Web,
  • does the skin you purchased have HTML and XML files in the skins and containers folders or does it only have ASCX files (in addition to the image and css files)

Check all of that, and also ensure that you have Firefox installed along with the two extensions, Firebug and the Web Developer Extension. These are vital.

There are many posts on skinning and I've made many myself, both here and in the old asp.net forums. The core documentation is too hard to understand at the early stage, but you can give it a try.. it's in the documentation download on the downloads page here.

Also.. check http://www.dnncreative.com/Home/FreeContent/tabid/101/Default.aspx for a few pages of free content and visit his very good site here http://www.skinningtoolkit.com/

Have a dig through that and see what sticks,
Rob

Excellent stuff.

Just to confirm I'm developing locally so I do have full access - I'll do some experimenting now that I understand the heirarchy and I'll read through the resources you suggest.

Many thanks for this Rob, I appreciate you checking back and sorry for not responding sooner!!

Regards, Sean
