Awhile back I installed DNN.3.1.0 on my local Windows 2k advanced server.  I host a few low bandwidth sites from my home.  One of them is a DNN-based portal site.  The others are .NET based sites I wrote.

Earlier in the year I decided Comcast was too expensive so I switched to ATT/Yahoo DSL.

Comcast in all the years I had them only changed my IP once (eventhough it was not a 'static'.)  With DSL the IP can switch 2 times a day some times.

It kind of makes it hard to host sites from home.

I wrote a windows service to monitor my IP and m also thinking of extending my Windows Service to alert the DNN config file, adding the new IP should it change.

Is there any way I can continue to host my DNN site at home and not have to do either option?

Thanks!

I have a similar problem using Verizon DSL, about 1 time per month they change my ip address.  The way I fixed this was by registering a domain name with no-ip.  Their website is at www.no-ip.com.  You can register the domain name for free.  The free url isn't a perfect one but, for me, it works.  They also have a free program that you can download on the server and it will update the redirect whenever your ip changes.  For your purpose I guess the questions is, how did you access the site originally, were you accessing by ip address?

Maybe it's time to find a hosting service then.

I'll check into no-ip.com.  It sounds interesting.

I originally installed DNN on my server via Terminal Services and initalized it using http://localhost/dnnbop

Later I added an alias so I could get to the site via any of the machines in my home.  The alias looked like http://<severname>/dnnbop

When I was done setting the site up, I added an alias such that http://<external IP>/dnnbop

It worked well for years until I switched to DSL.  I knew the DSL IP would switch some times but this is nuts!  I'd be happy if it switched only 1 time a month.

However, (knocking on wood), this current IP has not expired for about 3 weeks now.

Warren:

Another excellent (free) service to do the dynamic DNS trick is www.dyndns.com.  I have been using them for several years for customers that have DSL and it has worked flawlessly.  With the free service you can have URLs like yournamehere.dyndns.com/ but you may also pay to register a domain with them even if the address is dynamic.  (They also have a bunch of domains you can use, it doesn't have to be just dyndns.com).  They are really a very complete service.
