I am trying to configure it so that a users e-mail is used as the login like it is on so many other site. This way the user only has to remember their password instead of userid and passsword. I want to make it as easy as possible for my valid users to get back into the web site and I think this would be a great improvement.

If you are creating the user accounts, you could just use their email address as their username.

As both of the above posters mentioned you cannot have this be the default username without having either the users enter it, or modifying the registration process.

Now, one thing that I have noticed some people doing in the past is to modify the registration information text to include a note about the username..
