HOW do I get the sub-calender settings to work for two events modules on a site?

I have a calendar (events module) set to display on every page of the site in the leftpane of a skin that is set to only the "list events" mode and is using the "small" style; however I want to be able to present the same calendar content in the main contentpane of another page using the bigger "default" style with all display modes available. I need to link these two calendars so that events added to one show up in the other and vice-versa.

To do this I have set the sub-calendar options of both (also tried setting one or the other)... but in all cases, events from one calender never show up in the other.

Any idea of what I am doing wrong?
