Hi, can anyone recommend what (if any) intermediate upgrades I should do to go from 4.4.1 to 4.8?

Sebastian will likely come in and let us know, but I believe that you would want to upgrade to 4.06.02, then 4.08.00.  What would be nice is a kind of roadmap made available to all of us to depict a suggested upgrade path.

To all DNN bloggers...  This would make a GREAT blog post!  :)

Many thanks Will. Any other thoughts? Sebastian or others?

Also, I've noticed some people suggest using the install kit for upgrades instead of the upgrade kit. What is the considered wisdom of this?

I compared the Install to Upgrade for 4.8 and the only differences were....

1. all the Modules were in Install
2. the Web.config was in Install
3. a database.mdb was in Install.

I used the install and it went great.

Noting those differences, I would suggest not using the Install zip, as you would have extra files that are unnecessary.  There is no need to add an additional MDF file, module resource files, etc.

On that note, I would like to point your attention to my latest blog entry.  It concerns a suggested upgrade path and would likely be more useful to others that get to this post via search engine queries.  Also, this list is subject to change as I get corrected on my compilation.
