How about your host performance settings - are either one of them currently set to memory? Set page state to page and module caching to disk.

Both set as described.

After commenting out System.Web.Extensions & System.Windows.Forms, new lines appeared as if by magic again today with them in, so Edit mode stopped working again.

Sorry, but until the forums get fixed, I don't get notificatrions of new replies on the thread.

I had an issue a few years ago where wierdness like what you describe was happening, and for my instance, it was due to a lack of RAM on the server. Adding 1GB cleared things up. It wasn't so much that DNN needed another 1GB to move, but that with some other things that were happening on the server, I was hiting the limit all around.

Not sure what your situation is - shared, dedicated, etc. - but random wierdness like you describe sounds like a server/memory lack of resources.

dam% computers doing things on thier own again!!!  very strange problem indeed.  maybe a ram issue like the last guy said..

Are you messing around in Visual Studio with the live copy?  Maybe some "tool" you are using is adding the stuff.  I'd be more inclined to think it's something related to a tool...something a program is doing to supposidly help you, but is actually causign headaches.  Wizards and crap like that are really very little help in the end, in my opionion.

Very rarely to I see computers "just do" something on thier own.  Usually when something mysterious is happening, it's a tool or something doing it.

I'd open that bad boy up with Notepad, edit it....and touch nothing for a few days other than Internet explorer and see what happens :->

Try forbidding access to "web.config" for anyone exept yourself (exclude permissions for system, asp.net and network service "users").
