Thanks for pointing me in the right direction it was the google talk script which was causing the problem.

This is EXACTLY what was happening to me. Turned out to be a malformed script for adsense that was in the footer of the page(bad end of script tag-- no '>' and a final end of script tag that was extra. Once correctedmy site was back to normal... which explains why the menus were working on the admin and edit pages from my browser history still --- no ads!
