Good morning, all!  Noobie in the house... thank you all for your patience!

Yesterday I ran a reinstall of 4.3.4, and now no one can login-- no host, no admin, no pre-existing user.  "Login Failed, remember passwords are case sensitive" error.  New users can register and get in, however, that does not help me from a site administration perspective.

I've seen some strings on how to fix this, and have navigated to the user table, changed the passwords (setting to "0" for clear) and was able to get in breifly.  But as soon as I changed the type to encrypted on the table ("2"), no login capability again.

I've seen suggestions to look at the web.config file, but I'm not sure what I need to be looking at there or what the string should look like.  I have no doubt this issue has been discussed, but I cannot find a full description of the fix.

Please help-- thank you so much!!

Hi Kdcj1,

Verify that your validationKey and decryptionKey were not modified during your reinstall.  They will need to be *exactly* as they were prior to the upgrade for .Net membership to be able to decrypt your existing user accounts.

These keys are located as attributes in the <system.web> node of your web.config.  Note that if they have changed, and you revert to your previous values, then the NEW accounts you created will not be able to log in (because they would be using the updated keys).

Hope this helps!

Brandon
