Hi DNN Pros,

I'm very new at DotNetNuke, and I'm charged with upgrading an old version (3.2.2) to 4.8.2. I really need your help.

For the past week-or-so, I've been trying to sift through a ridiculous amount of info gathered from various forums on how this may be achieved.

I've found a document on this site "Upgrading DNN 3.x to DNN 4.x" by Mitchel Sellers, which is very well presented. The recommendation is to first upgrade to 3.3.7, then 4.4.1, and finally 4.8.2. Is this still valid? Are there any other, more straight-forward, procedures I can follow?

I'm also using some 3rd party modules which need upgrading :

  • Bring2Mind's DMX 03.04.08 (with addons)
  • ZLDNN's Module Wrapper 04.02.02
  • Efficion's AdvancedDataGrid 03.01.03 now obsolete, and need replacement
  • Efficion's WhatsNew 01.01.00
  • Effority's User & Role Manageer 01.01.00
  • HouseOfNuke's HouseIndex 01.10.00
  • HouseOfNuke's HouseMenu 01.02.01

I'd like to have your advice on how to proceed with this upgrade, and if possible, any supporting documentation or references to posts that may already exist on this topic.

My sincere thanks,

Rad Srag

For the 3rd party modules, I'd check whether the authors have made upgrades to their modules. If not then you might be in a bind unless you've got the source for those modules. You might also be able to continue using them as is with 4x even though they were built for 3x of DNN....

The steps that Mitch has suggested of upgrading first to 4.4.1 and then 4.8.2 are still valid and the recommended route. I've done it a couple of times without any issues. If you do run into issues when upgrading from 3.3.7 to 4.4.1, you should try and fix them before you try moving from 4.4.1 to 4.8.2.

  • DMX from Bring2Mind is still supported and new versions shall be compatible with latest DNN versions
  • Module Wrapper I don't use, but AFAIK there are new versions, see www.zldnnmodule.com
  • Advanced DataGrid from Efficion Consulting hasn't been updated for some time, you might want to replace it by Reports module or SQLGridSelectedView from www.tressleworks.ca
  • There are current version of Effority modules
  • HouseOfNuke Modules are updated and latest versions are reported to work fine with latest DNN

Thanks for the reply, it's rather reassuring.

However, there is no 4.4.1 version in the Downloads section. On SourceForge, I was only able to find the DNN 4.4.1 Installer. Is it not the Upgrader that I'll need?

Thanks again!
