Mike,

First of all, to give you an idea.  I run a DNN installation that has 5 portals, 2000K users, a few hundred pages and a lot of custom module content and forums.  I am using a total of 42mb of database space for that installation, so yes, those numbers are a bit off.

With GoDaddy it is very common for them to not truncate the log file on their routine backups.  I would ask them how often they are taking backups and when they truncate your log file.  This is something that they should give you an answer on.

Also, to do a bit of digging, run the following command to see your overall database size.

sp_spaceused

See what that equals, then if you have a look at my blog http://www.mitchelsellers.com I have an article on Get all table sizes, where you can investigate the size on disk of all tables in your database.

However, if you .bak file is only 15 mb, I would guess that your total usage is under 20mb and the rest is a bloated transaction log.

if you have any questions feel free to drop me a message as I don't always notice replies here on the forums (msellers@iowacomputergurus.com)

Thanks Mitch,

I'm going to try the things you've suggested. The sp_spaceused is what is telling me 150 MB.

I have fought endlessly with godaddy to shrink my database and they absolutely refuse to yet I don't have permissions to do it myself.

I have considered 3essentials as a host but that will be my 3rd host in 4 months and the email nightmare it creates for everyone in my company, during the propagation is almost unbearable. I'd like to find a home that works for me.

Mitch once I investigate this I send you an email with the results.

Thanks and I'd love to hear from other godaddy users,

Mike

Mike:

I don't know if they will let you do this but something I do for my databases is to set the "Recovery model" to "Simple".  This does not save all the transactions on the database but for sites that don't change much that is okay.  In that way the transaction log will remain small all the time.

With Simple revovery you do need a full backup of the whole database in order to recover from a major failure by the way.

Thanks Carlos,

Unfortunately they don't allow you to do that and just like everything else database related they refuse to do it.

Thanks for the idea though.

No other godaddy users or 3essentials lovers? I really need feedback, good or bad, so I can make this my final move.

Thanks,

Mike

As a stopgap measure you could always:

Backup your database,
Delete your database,
Create a new database,
Restore your Database

Would hate to have to do that regularily though...
