any hints why this is occurring:

 
An error has occurred while establishing a connection to the server.  When connecting to SQL Server 2005, this failure may be caused by the fact that under the default settings SQL Server does not allow remote connections. (provider: Named Pipes Provider, error: 40 - Could not open a connection to SQL Server)
Description: An unhandled exception occurred during the execution of the current web request. Please review the stack trace for more information about the error and where it originated in the code.

David, can you connect remotely to your SQL server via query analyzer or another tool?

when I changed the Datasource=LAPTOP to

datasource=LAPTOP/SQLEXPRESS

 

in the web.config  the error did not occur.

 

now I get my default.aspx page to come up but login will not give me access with the known user name and password.

Is this a new install? If not, did you copy the machinekeys from the existing web.config file when you setup your local machine?
