Thank you for all your wise words and I should find a diffrent hosting provider. However this is a school site and we have to use this server.

DNN 2.12 is stable, fast, and the most reliable version of DNN.  It provides enough features you will use/need.  There's plenty of free stuff still available.  Only downside is the lack of future enhancements by the core team.   I'm sure I'm not alone in this world that is still using it in production...

Is is possible to install DNN 4.8 on an ASP.net server and connect to a MYSQL db on another server. I know this may sounds strange, but this is a school site that must be on a server and they will ONLY provide MS Access support. Which is a great pity.

you can access database on another server, but it will be hard to find a MYSQL database provider. You should look for MS SQL Express on another server instead, but make sure, there is a fast connection between both servers, otherwise you will run into timeouts.
