I'm a complete newbie to DNN and I can't find the info I seek in documentation or in the forums so sorry if I've overlooked this issue. I'm trying to add multiple websites (portals) to my hosted install account. I have several domains that I want to set up through DNN. My assumption was that when accessing the domains the content would come from my portal account. However, I only get 400 Bad Request errors. I've tried doing a domain forward, http redirects, etc and all I get are errors. How do I set up a portal to use different domains for separate websites? What exactly is a portal alias? If my defaul install is www.mymaindomain.com/dnn, how do I alias another domain such as www.myotherdomain.com to point to the content in my portal?

I am also fairly new, but have discovered a few things. First of all, is your DNN installed in the root?  What version, if newbie, presumably 4.08.x?  Do you have a domain up and running yet?  I have succeeded in getting my site up and running, and on the same SQL Server have added another completely different [parent] portal.  www.myoriginaldomain.com, from that created www.anotherdomain.com, no redirects, no fancy forwardning, nothing, just straight.  Different skins, different everything except running off one hosting account - shared hosting,  mind you!

When you set up the domains in your hosting package (presuming the package allows multiple domains), it needs to point to root (or wherever it is installed).  But better to be in root, then you don't have the thing where a visitor needs to go into www.mydomain.com/dotnetnuke/ before being able to get in!

It is great when it works, fun, exciting, creative... all those feel-good feelings!

P.S. Adding the portals/ alias is the easy part.  Get the hosting server correctly set up, and you won't have the same problems.  Just different ones (only joking! :) )

Thanks for the response Lori. I am using GoDaddy as my host currently, although I'm about to drop them since they can't provide me with any help, and using version 4.08.0 with the default install not in root (domain.com/dnn) because that's where I'm forced with their auto install. I'm at my wits end on this thing. I spent days messing around with DNN and finally took the big plunge and purchased multiple skins and modules and that's when I discovered that my idea of using all my parked domains for websites under DNN came crashing down. What little documentation there is made it sound like a no brainer to host multiple sites under one install. Now I'm mad because I spent so much money and can't do anything with any domains besides the default install account. I've tried forwarding the DNS, pointing to the root, doing a URL redirect and nothing has worked. Either I get an error or it brings up my default portal which does me no good. Now I'm getting ready to call other hosts and see if they can provide me with support on a hosting plan that will allow me to do what I want because all GoDaddy tells me is they don't support the apps that they install.

David, apologies for only replying now... wish I had seen yours sooner and not today for the first time...

Don't ever quit as the saying goes!  You will be glad you have done what you did, up to the above anyway.  I was close to throwing in the towl sefveral times myself.  I still feel like that at times, but it is such a super package, and GoDaddy are really not that bad, believe me - the others are not much better, and if they are, they cost more. Paying a little for the next two years compared to paying more over the next two years... hmm, once you know what to do , you do not need to pay more, is my thinking anyway.  But if you want to move, then do it for the right reasons, not out of desperation.  You can use all your parked domains on this account (presuming you have the deluxe or above account).

I have had success from www.spencerteck.com, and the person who owns it, called John.  He is awesome, and has helped me a lot. And doesn't charge, so my suggestion is don't expect immediate response, but he is actually committed to helping out.  If you go here, http://www.spencerteck.com/WalkThroughsGuides/tabid/79/Default.aspx you will be able to download the exact step by step [walkthrough] instructions on how to set up the DNN in the root of your GoDaddy account.  I have done it, albeit with his assistance wsitht he web.config.  It iwll be a good learning curve for you, you will realise how far you have come when you are finished, and the sense of achievement is great.  I had the feeling it could be done, but didn't know how.  The document on that site will tell you how!  And it works, I set up another portal from within DNN on my main account, and voila!  there it was, in all its glory.  YAY!  feel free to contact me off-line if you want to know more, or if you need the documents or whatever.
