Forgive if the answer is easy to this question but I really do not want to make a mistake on this one.

I have nearly built a website using DNN that has several other websites running from the same installation.   This website uses a .co.uk domain.  I have decided to buy the .com extension and have the .co.uk forward to the .com.

now how I do this saftly as the whole website has already been built.  So the whole website is currently running a live under the .co.uk.  But I need it running under the .com

Any ideas

Thanks

Hi there,

This is more of a domain name issue, and it also depends on your hosting environment (does it allow multiple domain names?).

Firstly, you ensure the new domain name is pointing to the same location as the current one. You will need to create the necessary records in your domain name server (dns) settings and ensure your hosting environment is ready to 'accept' the new record. If you are able to do this, loading the new domain will load the default DNN setup that you have made ready.

Next, login as the host/superuser account and edit the portal alias by adding the new domain name. This way, there should not be any downtime and both domains will be loading exactly the same website.

Try it out and post any problems you may face so we can help you out along the way. Cheers!

Hi and thanks for the answer

Well yes all the dns settings have been done but i really want the .co.uk to forward to the .com rather than both domains have there dns pointing at my hosting company.

It makes sense only to do this with one domain.  I am not sure why, just thinking of site stats with Google analytics ect

Cheers

Provided your .com domain is resolving to your website IP address. Note as said above, if your using host headers in IIS or an Alias' in DNN (www.mydomain.com) rather than an IP address, you'll need to add the .com domain into your HTTP Alias'.

Then, in your DNS record for your .co.uk domain, forward it to your .com domain with a redirect type of 301 (permanent).
