The solution in the Gemini thread sounds great in theory, but realistically it's a lot of work for a issue with a priority of "minor" - I don't think it will make it in anytime soon unfortunately - unless you know otherwise Alex?

In the meantime, I am going to write a SQL script to change all duplicates to have an incremented number on the end - something like the Duplicate DisplayName script on ActiveSocial.

I really want a way of moving all changed users into a new role (something like "DuplicateEmail") and then I can target them with a module on the Forgotten PW or log in page saying they need to change their address or to contact me if they can't log in.

I'll try and come up with a script....
