I am trying to figure out what controls the Physical Path in the Host Settings area. It is a read only field, so what controls it?

I am trying to take a portal in a DNN instance and move it out to its own instance of DNN. I have done this about a half dozen times without issues. Here is what I did so far. Maybe I just forgot something simple.

  1. Used my control panel to create a new client account and created a website space for the new site.
  2. I setup a temp url based on my root domain so the site could continue to run in the existing DNN instance while we work on the new site.
  3. I created a new database with its own login.
  4. I then took a fresh backup of the database where the DNN portal currently exists and restored it to the new database.
  5. I went into the properties and set the Logical names of the data and log files
  6. I set the new db user to have dbo privileges
  7. I copied over the code files from the existing DNN instance to the new DNN folder.
  8. I edited the web.config file to use connection strings to the new database
  9. I tried to browse the temp domain but it redirected to the old domain and I did not recognize it.
  10. So I made a couple of minor Host Setting changes to see if it was updating the new database and found that it was updating the old database.
  11. I have tried several things to try to get it to use the new database with no success.
  12. I took out all the Portal Aliases and added in the new temp domain as an alias for the particular PortalID.
  13. Now the site will not come up at all or redirect to the old site either.
  14. When I look at the Host Setting for Physical Path it has the physical path of the existing site not the new site.
  15. So when the site was coming up it was apparently coming up from the old dnn instance.

Thanks for any ideas you might have on what to try next.

Well, there were a couple of permission settings in my control panel that did not get set since I copied over the files.

Normally when I do a standard DNN install these settings get made automatically. I updated them and the site came up with the correct Physical Path and I have made some minor changes in settings and can see that these are being reflected in the correct db. So I am good to go.

Maybe this will help someone else in the future.
