You need to look at the skinning elements then.

There is a skinning forum here, but you can also read the skinning documentation provided in the folder.

You can also download free skins that are already created to get an idea - I have one that does something along the lines you're talking about - eg. Front page is formatted one way, Sub Pages, the other way.

You can get an idea of how the pane formatting behaves by looking at the default skins in the dotnetnuke installation.

I have a free video that explains about the skinning engine, and it might help you - it's located http://www.xd.com.au/downloads.xd - you will need to register to download.

In reference to allowing your viewers to see different skins when logged in there are a couple of options - the http://www.snapsis.com skinning engine alloes you to select skins for that page, which you can make public - it requires some skin configuration but John Mitchell is very helpful.

I also purchased a skin switcher module - I'm still testing - it's overall function is to allow changing the skin on the whole site - but with further configuration can be modified to change per page.. I can have a look at that and post further comments here if you wish.
