We are having problems with the configuration of the SMTP server for sending e-mail.

This is the message from the event log :

Bad sequence of commands. The server response was: This mail server requires authentication when attempting to send to a non-local e-mail address. Please check your mail client settings or contact your administrator to verify that the domain or address is defined for this server.

SMTP Server & Port : i.e. smtp.ourmailserver.com:25

However, when I click on 'test' it says:

There has been an error trying to send the test email. The error is:
support@localhost:2403: The specified string is not in the form required for an e-mail address.

or

There has been an error trying to send the test email. The error is:
Bad sequence of commands. The server response was: This mail server requires authentication when attempting to send to a non-local e-mail address. Please check your mail client settings or contact your administrator to verify that the domain or address is defined for this server.

Please can you confirm what exactly should be inputted in to the fields - SMTP Server and port:  and - Host Email:

Our server uses MailEnable as POP/SMTP client - users have to be authenticated by dafault.

Any ideas on where things are going wrong will be appreciated.

You have SMTP server and port correct, otherwise you wouldn't get the response.  But your server requires a login and you haven't configured that.  SMTP Server Settings, configure Basic authentication, enter login and password.  If you don't know your login, check with your email administrator.

Make sure the Host Email: setting at the top of your Host Settings page is set to a valid e-mail address yourname@domain.com. Also make sure you don't have SMTP Authentication set to Anonymous (Default).
