I have recently uploaded a skin set and installed it to my host site.  I applied one of the skins and ever since have been unable to get into my host site.  I can get into a parent portal I have created fine, as that used the default skins.

The first problems were that I was getting service unavailable.  I recreated the application pools on my IIS server just in case.  However, although this resolves the service unavailable problem (every so often something still stops the application pool so I have to restart it), I just cannot get access.  I get the standard page about Internet Explore not being able to display the page.  If I go to my IIS server and browse the site directly I get the following (not very helpful error):-

Error

The requested URL could not be retrieved

While trying to retrieve the URL:

The following error was encountered:

Read Error

(131) Connection reset by peer

This means that:

An error condition occurred while reading data from the network. Please try your request again.

I'm still not sure what the problem could be.  The only thing I did do was delete an old directory that was left over as part of the skin upload.

Managed to fix the problem eventually.  It turned out to be an issue with the skins....whether there is a minor bug, or a problem with the installation (it did come from dnnskins), I'm not sure.

Anyway, luck was in.  Because I was still able to access the additional portal I had set up, I was able to login as the host, and could therefore edit the "primary" portal, ie the one I had set up originally.  I was able to reset the skins for the host and the site back to the dnn blue ones.  As soon as I had done this, updated, I was able to connect immediately to my site.

I will test again with the new skins, by deleting, reinstalling etc, and see if this was some bizarre issue with installation.

There is another way. If you cannot get in to change your active skin or container, most likely the skin or container is broken (like a skin uploaded as a container).  Just rename/delete the offending skin/container and copy a known good one so it has the same name.

Knowing this saved me a very sleepless night.
