I have a requirement that once a user registers and logs in, they not have to log in again (when using the same browser) for a period of time - ideally infintiely.

Playing with cookie settings in web config hasn't gotten me anywhere - any help greatly appreciated.

When you login you can check the box that says "Remember Me".  You could get into the source and check that box, hide it and then recompile.

What happens is this. A user successfully logs into portal, then closes the browser. When the browser is opened again and that user goes back to the portal, it should automatically sign him on. It used to work this way before, but now something is changed and when the user goes back to the portal, he has to login again. It maybe a setting in Webconfig file, but I do not know for sure.

If you check "remember the login" - it does work 1 time. So after reopening the browser and going to back to the portal, it does log the user. But after the user closes the browser and goes back to the portal, the second time, it does not recognize that user anymore.

Can someone please help?

Thank you.

I imagine that the users are deleting their cookies.  But we would need someone to confirm that the user information is stored in a cookie.  It could be persisted in a session or the SQL database.
