In order for mail to be send through DNN you have to login as Host, go to the Host > Host Settings page.  Once on the Host Settings page expand the SMTP Configuration section and configure DNN to use your SMTP.  Once configured, update and then test the settings by clicking the Test link.

You should set like the following:

SMTP Server and port: 127.0.0.1

SMTP Authentication: Anonymous

Username and password: blank

You can refer to this link www.aboutdnn.com/Blog/tabid/76/EntryID/6/Default.aspx for how to set up SMTP in DNN.

But many users report that they are still unable to send verify email even though they have sucessfully setup SMTP and received the SMTP testing email. I am stiil working on it. Anybody konw some information about this?

Well, I can't speak for everyone, but after two days of pulling my hair out I figured out why my host portal (which is on domain A) could send email even though none of my child portals (which are on Domains B, C, and D) could send emails.  My host requires that the from address in any sent email be the same as the account used to authenticate with the email server.  So, since DNN only allows email to be configured at the host level, I can't configure all of my child sites to send email unless I make the email addresses for all administrative accounts for my alternate domains the same as the account I used to authenticate with my server.  This kinda sucks.

Now, I'm not saying this is DNN's fault.  I am ticked at my host about this, but they will not budge on the policy due to being used as a spam hub in the past.  That said, if I might make a suggestion to the DNN team - please move email configuration from host level configuration to site level configuration.  At the very least, give us the option to override the host email settings in each portal.  That would be incredibly helpful...

Of course the problem may be that I'm still using DNN 03.03.00.  I haven't upgraded yet, but am considering doing so.  I just don't want to deal with the hassle of an upgrade failure.  Is this issue already fixed in more current releases?  Is the migration path to new versions pretty painless?  I would upgrade today if it fixed this email issue I'm dealing with.
