But it doesn't exist. I looked in Main_PortalAlias and it isn't in there. I had created another portal using this alias but I changed its alias to something else. Now it won't let me create another one using that alias. Is it stored somewhere else?

Hey ferrethouse,

Can you take a look at the table in the database to see what entries are stored? Run this query from the Host -> SQL window: select * from {databaseOwner}{objectQualifier}portalalias

Thanks,

Ian

Thanks for the reply Ian.

Here is the problem I am now experiencing. I have several entries in PortalAlias that look something like this...

Portal ID     HTTPAlias

0                215-821/mining

16              215-821/mining/main

I can view my "mining" website at this URL...

http://215-821/Mining/Home/tabid/305/Default.aspx

If I copy all of the code to a new server named "215-1097" and change all of the aliases in the database to "215-1097" instead of "215-821" I get a

Internet Explorer cannot display the webpage

Error. I don't understand why I can't copy the code the code to a different server, setup IIS correctly, and change the PortalAlias entries.

Man this is frustrating.

I think I figured most of it out...

1. When I copy the files to the new server I needed to change the permissions on the directories (I added everyone full access - probably not the best idea).

2. I had to turn caching off. Because the pages were cached it kept redirecting me back to the old server and I couldn't figure out why. Cleared the cache and turned it off (for now).

I haven't figured out everything but this is a big step in the right direction.

Hey ferrethouse,

You're welcome - a note about the file permissions - if you are using Windows Server 2003, 2008, or Vista you should only need to give the Network Service account "Modify" permissions - if you are using Windows XP you should give the ASP.NET Machine Account modify permissions. The difference between Modify and Full Control is solely the ability to grant other users permissions, from what I understand.

Good luck!
