I've hit a crossroad here and I'm not sure what the best method would be to address it. My second site is operating as a child portal to the main website. I guess the problem here is user accounts. They seem to be independent from each other in the database (userID’s are matched with the portalID’s). However, because I’m dealing with the same content editor people for both sites, this is causing a problem. Is there a way in DNN that would allow us to have the accounts from the main site also be able to cross over to a child portal to edit content? Right now, it appears only the host account allows for this. Do you guys have any suggestions?

Having a child portal gives us the benefit of allowing them to have a completely different menu system, which is good. But I think it’s really redundant to create a 2nd set of user accounts for the child portal for the sake of editing content.

Having one site with a page to simply represent the child site, as just another non-menu displaying page, would work account-wise, but then we lose the ability to use the menu on the left side of the page. What should we do in this case? Just duplicate accounts for the new portal?

There are a few things you can do.  If you create a user on a child site that exists on the parent site, then you need to create a user with the exact same username and password as the one on the parent.  This will make the user exists on both sites.

Another option would be to add any user that needs to exist on both sites into the UserPortals table.   The UserPortals table associates a UserID with the portal the user has access to.   If you have a few select users that need to work across portals then you could add entries in the UserPortals table for those users.

The third option is a third party module that allows you to share users across portals.

I have used DnnMasters.com User Sharing Extreme to do this.  It allows for the sharing of users and roles across portals and sound like something you are wanting.

I think DataSpring.com offers a User Login module that will also allows users from one portal to login to another.
