Who ever may know!

For my site, I require more information about the users during the registration process. I would like to add their department or location in the building onto the " Preferred User Information" . Is there a way to do this? in the code? or administratively? Once I know who they are, I can then authorize their access. Any thoughts would be helpful!... I'm using the login for an internal Intranet, so I need to weed out the external users. It would help the process...

Darryl,

the user profile is easily extendable (using "Manage Profile Properties" command in admin :: User Profiles)  and you can configure user profile (using "User Settings" command in admin :: User Profiles) to display and require profile while registering, displaying profile fields beneath the preferred User Information.
