Aargh!

I've been running a DNN portal server since 1.x and just recently have started running into a really strange problem.  My current installation info is:

  • Dual Xeon server w/ 2GB RAM and ultra-wide SCSI drive
  • Windows Server 2003 Standard
  • .Net Framework 1.1
  • DNN 3.2.2
  • MS SQL Server 2005 Standard
  • DNN Performance Setting = Moderate Caching

The wierd thing that's happening is that when anyone creates or removes modules from their pages, the changes are not reflected immediately.  The changes are saved to the database, and if they refresh their browser a bunch of times it *might* update to the current state.  Quite often they need to shut down their browser an re-login - obviously a huge PITA.

I have tried to drop the performance setting to No Caching, and while it did solve the disappearing modules problem, the performance of the servier (obviously) totally tanked.  It was unacceptably slow.

So now I'm stuck between a rock and a hard place.  Use caching and frustrate my portal admins, or drop the caching level and frustrate everyone.  Has anyone else here suffered from this?  Is there a cure?  Will Lassie come home with the medicine before it's too late???

Any help appreciated - yada yada...

Marc

I am having this problem as well, with 4.03. Setting to "light" caching seems to help for my site.

Then again, it could just be luck, but I see a lot less of the "random dissapearing and reappearing" modules then before.

No caching totally hosed my site.  It took > 20 seconds to render a page.  That wasn't a viable alternative.

ok let me understand,  your users delete a module and it still shows up?

can they edit it after?

Excellent thread.  I'm having the exact same problem.  It's a Catch-22.  Either the entire site is dog slow, of I get the portal admins calling me to say that DNN is messed up.  There must be a middle ground -- like DNN updating the Cache when a module is updated.  Has anyone solved this?

Also, what are the thoughts about Disk Caching versus Memory Caching?  My guess is that Memory Caching produces the best overall results, but may eventually drag the whole server down if your site is very popular.  Right?

Users can create a module, say a Text/HTML, have it appear on the page, then click the Edit Text link and not only does the edit screen not show up, the entire module has disappeared.  Press Ctrl-F5 and *maybe* the edit window shows up, maybe you have to refresh again.  Okay, edit window appears, you make your edits, click update.  Page loads - maybe no module at all, maybe module - pre text entry state, maybe everything's okay - it's a crap shoot.  You get pissed off and finally get to the settings screen for the module.  You click delete.  Page refreshes - guess what? module is still there - but not really - because when you refresh the browser, the module has gone away.

Another favorite trick of my server to play on my admins is "batch the add commands".  In this trick, the admin adds a module, the page reloads sans new module.  The admin assumes they screwed up and tries the operation again.  This time TWO modules!  Lots of fun!

This is just an example of the wackiness that is driving my portal admins (and me) nuts.  I'm quite sure it's not a client issue because my admins are geographically distant, on seperate machines, running all different flavours of browsers, but we're all experiencing the same pain (and all wanting to make me walk the plank!).

I've tried tweaking down the server caching to "light caching" but to no avail.

One thing I haven't thought of until now is the IIS compression.  I went through the hoops of turning on IIS compression quite a while ago and the portal HAD been wroking fine with it on... however I'm curious if any of you other people in the same situaiton have turned on IIS compression.  If we are going to track down the culprit for this problem, I think we all need to find someting in common with our installations.

Any new thoughts?

Marc
