Hello, sorry to keep bugging everyone but I'm just trying to figure out this one thing and I just can't get it right! So let me clarify what I am trying to do:

I would like to set up the following on a single installation of DNN:

dnnsite.com
parent1.dnnsite.com
parent2.dnnsite.com
parent3.dnnsite.com
parent4.dnnsite.com

where each parent portal has a unique nav. Right now, when I attempt to create parent portals in Host > Portals, it seems to not create a new portal at all, but rather just take me back to dnnsite.com. I have all the subdomains pointed to the install folder at dnnsite.com.

Is this even possible or am I just wasting time? Please please please, can anyone help me?

Make sure the portal alias is set up in your list above for each portal. If your sites are prefixed with www. then prefix your portal aliases as well.
Also make sure all your domain names are pointing to the root of the DNN web folder, and when you do not have website redirection set up at the domain register end.

I believe I have these things set up correctly. Here is what I did:

with the host:
1) I created subdomains for portal1.dnnsite.com et al. however, I did this w/o the www. because I have never seen a subdomain with a www. on the front of it. does this mean I need to change the install URL from www.dnnsite.com to http://dnnsite.com?
2) I pointed them at the installation folder, located at www.dnnsite.com

Not sure what else to do!

1) Yes if you don't have a www, don't put in a www in your alias (also don't put in a http:// in either).
2) When you say "install" folder, do you mean home folder? (that's what I mean).

Did you follow my advice about making sure the configuration is correct on the domain registrar end? (i.e. i.e. don't have redirection switched on, that you have directing via an A records or through a DNS server that is hopefully set up correctly).

All I can think of right now...Thanks....
