I have been searching for a way to extend the session timeout time but I can't seem to find it. Is this on the site or is it in a file somwhere that I have to edit? Thanks for any help.

Session timeout can be affected by a number of settings.  The primary value (session timeout) is set by your web host (IIS, APACHE or whatever you or your hosting provider may be using).

As far as DNN is concerned, there are a few local settings in your WEB.CONFIG file that define the timeout value for specific events:

  • Look under <HTTPRUNTIME> for "executionTimeout' for the timeout value for file transfers.
  • A setting under <authentication> section features the <forms> declaration with a timeout value of "240".
  • Your DB connection declaration also features a timeout value.  This is set to "120" by default.

If you need to extend your session time but do not have access to do so through your host then you'll need to cheat with a client-side solution that makes an intermittant web request to keep the session alive for some defined period of time.  I've written such a solution for DNN and will be blogging a simple example of it soon.
