I'm finally seeing the light and want to make the switch from Godaddy.

I've read previous posts about best hosts... but they're older.  I would like to go with 3Essentials, but they only offer Windows 2003.

I just don't see a reason not to host with a Win 2008 provider.  I assume that some future features of DNN will eventually require Win 2008.

How do hosting companies usually handle upgrades of their software?

Basically, I want a DNN host that allows me to have at least 5 parent portals, reasonable amount of bandwith, 99.9% uptime, good speed, good support..... for under/around $30 a month.

Which features?

I don't know enough about IIS7 or Win 2008 to know if any future features of DNN will require a more recent server.

Is it something to not worry about?

I'd assume it's a better business decision to pick a server that's not running on 6 year old software when 1 year old software is available.  Is this assumption misguided?

I personally do not see any reason why hosting with a Windows 2003 server would be an issue.  There are new features in IIS, but as a rule of thumb if you are on a shared hosting environment (Which for your price point you will be), you will not typically see those benefits anyway.  Both editions can run the most current .NET versions, therefore from a DNN perspective I can't see there being ANYTHING that would require IIS 7 anytime in the reasonable future.

If you were on a dedicated environment, I would potentially recommend going 2008, just to avoid the need to manually perform a transition/upgrade later.  But since you are not, I wouldn't be too concerned.

Thanks for the reassurance Mitch. I actually signed up for 3essentials earlier after lots of research.  Their reviews were just too good. Hopefully if they ever make the transition, it'll be painless.

I guess it doesn't matter if they use Windows Server 2003 for now.  With the Plesk management, there aren't any features I'm lacking.
