Goal:

To host multiple DNN applications under the single URL – https://mySite.myWorld.com

Current situation:

I have multiple clients all within the same DNN application and they access their portal via a URL such as https://mySite.myWorld.com/<client>, i.e. for Joe bloggs inc they would have a URL such as https://mySite.myWorld.com/joebloggs.

The problem we have with this is that I already have over 200 child portals and this is causing many performance issues.

Proposed Solution:

So what I would like to do is introduce new DNN applications, using the same Domain (mySite.myWorld.com) but then have application numbers such as https:/mySite.myWorld.com/1/<client>, https:/mySite.myWorld.com/2/<client>, etc.

I would then have an IP redirector such as BigIP redirect the client to the appropriate DNN application based on the application number.

Issue:

I have just tried creating child portals with the address of http://mySite.TesthMyWorld.cm/1/NewSite and found that this URL does not work in DNN – I suspect because the URL represents a child portal within a child portal.

Help:

Can you review what I am trying to achieve and make any recommendations about how I can achieve my goal?

My thought is that you'll need to create a virtual directory on the server to point to the specific DNN install.  I've done it with plenty of websites - not so much DNN - but know the child portals & DNN is smart enough to know how to handle it.  Also - the websites need to be on the same server for the virtual directories to work - you may need to contact your hosting company to help

For example www.website.com

Install 1 has:
website.com
webstite.com/1
website.com/2

Install 2 has:
website.com/3
website.com/4

Virtual directories need to be setup for 3 & 4 that will have the website root point to install 2.

Again your hosting company should understand it.  It's the same principal as using a shared ssl certificate on a host.

Maybe I am just being thick, but I still don't understand how to do this because of the DNN URL's required.

I tried creating an alias of mysite.com/1/ and it simply doesn't work.

Am I asking for something that is impossible?

Any other idea's out there?

Basically, yes.  You're trying to solve the issue of having 200 portals on a single install where some or all of the portals are performing worse than expected.  There's nothing worng with your DNN setup or install, and changing the DNN architecture isn't the solution.  You might try some perfromance tuning on the server, both the serveer itself as well as IIS and SQL.  More RAM, allocating more resources in terms of CPU, swap file space, processor affinity, etc.  Faster drive subsystem, anything that would normally increase performance.

My suspicion is that you are reaching your performance limit on the system, and will need a second server and new DNN install, maybe a web farm setup or load balancing in order to expand.  200 portals isn't a lot and it isn't a minimal number.  The number is only relevant in terms of what those portals are and what traffic or resources they consume.  Be happy, your business is growing and you need to expand.

Hi Jeff,

We are already running our Portal on a web farm with load balancing across industrial strength servers and a separate database SQL server. Our peformance monitoring shows that during normal operations the server infrastructre has no problems at all. However we really experience severe problems with Module installations and child portal creation. We are currently running 4.9.0 and I am hoping to soon upgrade to 4.9.3 to resolve the child portal issue.

We want to have another DNN install, but what we really need is for the 2nd install to still have the same parent URL, i.e. https://mySite.myWorld.com so that we don't need to but another A-Record, SSL certificate and spend ££££'s on our marketing advising our customers on a new URL.
