Really strange one, this. I have a site, which does everything it should. It uses SQL Express, running in user-instance mode, because I accepted the DNN install default. However, I would like to implement a daily backup, and I can't, for the life of me, find where its data is stored! I've tried searching for files named .mdf, and none seem likely candidates; in fact most have not been changed in months (whereas the site changes regulralry). Does anyone have any idea where the DNN user-instance database is stored by default, and what its name might be? The connection strings are as follows ... Help much appreciated! Max

if you use file based connection string, database.mdf is inside app_data folder of your DNN installation. Be careful touching it with SSMS.

Thanks for your response. In fact the connection string seems to have been removed from my previous post. For reference, it is: Data Source=ELECTROMORPH\S15304561;Integrated Security=True;User Instance=True" providerName="System.Data.SqlClient Actually I also looked in the app_data folder, and there was an empty database in there. I deleted it, but the site is still working! So the data must be there somewhere... Any idea where it may be pointed at? Or is there a way of seeing which databases are registered with a user-instance of SQL Server?
