I'm seeing a lot of "Application Shutting Down" & "Application Started" showing up in the log.

I've got the /keepalive.aspx page loaded on a machine, so the site should be up.  Also, we've got a lot of activity on the site.

What's making the site shut down and restart?  How can I troubleshoot this?

Well, mostly the worker process restarts either:

1. If it is scheduled to restart often

2. If one of values defined for the process (timeouts, memory consumption, etc...) maxes out - if you have a lot of activity, probably it this second thing

Thanks for the reply, but I'm still not sure of the problem.  If it was a problem with timeouts, memory, etc wouldn't I see something in my log?

Below is my log from part of today.  A lot of shut down / restart, but no real errors.  I'm just not sure where to look from problems.  I'm guessing that my host is recycling the app pool often.

Does anyone have any suggestions.

Well the problems of App pool recycling isn't actually visible from dnn - it's more of a IIS thing, only sometimes (if you are lucky) you can see some exceptions in the event log of dnn.

did you check your server event log?

also, I wasn't able to find the real problem without going down under into analysing perf. of the application (you can read all about it in thoose 2 docs of MS)

you might want to check if you have any schedule jobs of dnn performing at the time of restarts, they might be peaking the server, which then causes the application to shut down (memory, cpu, thread, etc...-wise)
