Hello tribesmen,

Apologize if this question has been asked earlier.

My site, www.dancehic.com has been running for the last few years pretty well, I migrated the online version down to a local system. The DB has been migrated successfully and so has the site files.
I have also changed the web.config sucessfully, (I know all the above mentioned has been suceesful coz i kept getting weird errors which i solved to the point where it said database not found or needs upgrade)
However after i changed the portal alias from www.dancechic.com to http://localhost/dancechic/default.aspx browser says "Page not found"

Any idea why?

Hey Suman Biswas,

It sounds like you've already restored the database, created a db user & updated credentials in the config, and set the file system permissions. Then after updating the portal alias to 'localhost/dancechic' the only remaining step should be to set up IIS.

What exactly did you put in the portal alias table? You should have it entered as above 'localhost/dancechic' only (without quotes).

Do you have any other websites running locally - do you feel pretty confident that IIS is set up properly?

Take care,

Ian

Yes Ian,

I think IIS is working and set up well :)
To answer your questions, i tried several options with the portal alias, http://localhost/dancechic just localhost/dancechic of course everything without the quotes. The reason why i think IIS is working fine is coz i managed to istall a DNN 5.01, which does not mean that the dancechic folder (local folder for the live site) is configured properly, but like i mentioned i had several permission errors typical for ASP.NET NETWORK SERVICE and other stuff which i resolved. I wish i had a proper error, it just gets redirected else where. Dont understand why.
I also have other Classic ASP and ASP.NET sites running in the same IIS.
Just so that you guys can help me better here are some more details which i should have given earlier, sorry bout it.

WIN XP Laptop / SQL Server 2008 / IIS 5.1 / VS 2008 and 10

Rgds,
Suman.

Hey Suman,

Is this a true 404 error that you're getting (if you're unsure, try viewing the error in different browsers, some give you more info than the others). It could potentially be a page redirection issue as well...

Also, one thing I forgot to mention. You'll need to restart the application after you manually edit the portal alias table or the application may not know that it has changed. Of course, if your request for http://localhost/dancechic never actually gets to your app then that wouldn't matter too much.

Do you get the sense that the application is trying to load (i.e. it's taking some time before displaying the error) or is it just an immediate error message?

Hi Ian,

When you say application restart you mean IIS webserver restart right? If that is the case then it has been done several times. Becayse i have been suffering with this problem for quite sometime. Which means i have shut down my laptop quite a few times too!

Erm .. as far as application loaidng is concerned I dont think it is loading, is there any other way i could observe that from IIS or something? When I access the site, the first time it takes a while but subsequently the page not found comes out fast.
Browser wise: Internet explorer cannot display the page, Firefox says gateway timeout.

I am gonna try some more options, in the meanwhile let know if any of you have any more sugesstions.

Rgds,
Suman.
