"A Child Portal can be converted into a Parent Portal at any time by adding a Portal Alias entry."
I maintain the regional website for a large UK charitable association in DNN 04.03.05. The regional powers that be think my site is dead boring (it is!). However before I start to add skins etc. I need to be able to recover it in case I wreck it. I am the superuser and I see that I can Export Portal Template with module content. Can I use this child portal as a working portal and use it to update the parent portal?

Portal templates only export content for modules that support the IPortable interface, so not all information will come across.

If you are looking at testing, I truly recommend setting up a local copy of the site, using that to play with, and once you get it all working, then go ahead, and apply the updates to the production site.
