In Helm I define a sub domain named “demo” and helm creates a folder “demo” in the root of www.mydomain.com. I t also direct requests for that sub domain to the folder “demo”

You need to change that so that requests to "demo.mydomain.com" are directed to the root of the site.

Actually, what you really need to do is not create anything in Helm.  Simply create the "demo" parent portal and add a DNS entry for the host name "demo" that points to the same IP as the host "www" does.

Jeff, thank you.
After reading your reply I tried to remove the sub domain from Helm and deleted the directory it created. Set the parent portal and it did not work. I think the hosting company blocks this kind of configuration.
I am not sure what do you mean by “add a DNS entry for the host name "demo" that points to the same IP as the host "www" does” I have no access to the DNS.
