Hello:

I believe I understand what you are trying to do.  The application's code picks up localhost at various points, so I can understand why this would happen.

My recommendation would be to modify your hosts file located in c:\windir\system32\drivers\etc.  Edit the hosts file using a tool such as notepad.  You will probably have an entry such as "127.0.0.1       localhost".  Change the IP address to your's and this should keep your external clients pointing to your IP - which I believe is your concern, i.e. they are seeing http://localhost/yoursite in their own brower.  Is this correct?

Hope this helps!

That will help temporarly but if the application is so sticky to the localhost deployment seems like it would be a nightmare.  This seems to be a problem for several people on the forums without much answer.  I dont know if it is a bug or what is wrong.  Alias didnt fix it and I fear putting hours in dev and then not being able to move to production easy enough.  Funny thing that did work after a complete reinstall was if I installed with IP address and then added the localhost as an alias it did work but not vice versa.  Anyone have any suggestions on deployment with these issues?
Thanks for the great answers

I had the same problem, and managed to fix it by opening the database with the SQL Server Express Management tool and manually editing the record in the PortalAliases table to change from localhost to the ip eg. "localhost:7000" to "123.123.100.1:7000".

EDIT: Also, not sure if you need this but I also logged in as host and changed the "Host URL" under "Host Details to be "http://123.123.100.1" (ie. whatever your IP is).

This thing is a pig to install though, i tried on shared hosting for 2 days before giving up, and even on a clean Windows Server 2003 it's still taken me all day to get it running.

Hi Joe,

For some reason I assumed your cleints were/are intranet users or are able to access your network and authenticate to it.  If this is not correct, then my prior response would not help you.  Also, Steve's recommendation of changing the PortalAlias in the portal alias table is a better approach, since this is where the DNN application is picking up your URL for the root folder of your Virtual Website.

If your clients can ping your address, then setting up your website using IIS with a Virtual Website will work.  If you are redirecting to http://localhost/..., then your portal alias is setup to point there.  If your issue is more along the lines of your clients not being able to see your site, then what I would recommend is running your site from a developer's shared hosting plan such as Crystal Tech's for $3/mo.  You will have a publicly accessible IP address and no concerns over who can reach the site.  I wouldn't recommend opening a port unless this is for a specific period of time, it just pokes a whole thru your security for others to potentially hack into your network.

This isn't a DNN issue nor a Microsoft (IIS) issue, but the way the communication works over HTTP and your given typology needs.  Keeping your development site free of recycling concerns as you develop, and eliminating the 6 concurrent connection limitations for WinXP, if this is what your are developing under with IIS 5.x, is another benefit of using a third party hosting company.

Best of luck!

John
