I want to upgrade the version of DNN I am currently using for 5 websites. Previously, I always worked on sites that were hosted in house, so we would have a staging server to work on pages, and also to save backups. Since this is my first time working in a hosted environment, I am a bit stumped about backing up the sites. I know this is probably really beginner stuff, but I need a tutorial or step by step instructions how to back up my site. I've been told to use my FTP account, but although I can see the FTP space and sign in to it, through the control panel provided by my host (or by directly going there in my browser) I can't do anything else. And I have no idea where to find my page files to back them up anyway!

I've used FTP sites in the past to transfer large graphic files, etc, and that was a pretty simple drag and drop process. I am not seeing that capability in the DNN FTP at all. I'm sure I am missing something basic and simple.

Help would be greatly appreciated!

btw- I am on a MAC - but that has never made a difference before...

Thanks!

Hi Noreen,

I suppose it is going to come down to what tools your hosting company has given you, or the type of FTP software you are using.

I either use software from my hosting company called Dotnetpanel. In there I can select all of my files and zip them into a zip file I leave in the root "wwwroot" folder. If during an upgrade things go pear shaped, I can delete the install files (except the backup zip file) and restore. All I do there is highlight the zip file and click on an unzip button in the toolbar provided.

Othewise, I use an FTP software program called WS_FTP Pro to view my local pc on the left for example, and the root folder of my website in the right side. Just highlight all the files and folders on the right, and copy over to the left. 20min later I have a local copy of all of my files backed up.

I also use Dotnetpanel to backup my database and also copy that to my local pc and on to a RAID1 backup server for regular archiving for several websites I have running etc... Works well for me anyway .

I do have some free upgrade tutorials here...

Just follow the links to the installation tutorials. I hope that helps you.

Cheers,

Trev.

You can try my DNNInfo Free website backup, that will zip your all files and database in .bak format.
