Hi there,

We currently have our DNN-based volunteer community running at http://ctnation.citizenschools.net. However, we have just obtained http://www.ctnation.org.

I'd love community input about our options to merge these domains. In an ideal world, we would move the subdomain (http://ctnation.citizenschools.org) to http://www.ctnation.org, but think this might cause issues with internal links, etc, on the site. So, here are some questions we have:

1. What can we do to merge these domains? Can we set up an IIS instance of ctnation.org, and have it run the content on the current DNN install? Is this what host/portal/aliases are for on the DNN control panel? What other operations would we need to undertake to make this happen?

2. If not, is the next best-case to simply point traffic from ctnation.org to ctnation.citizenschools.org?

Thanks!

Setup a new IIS instance for the new domain name, point to the DNN Files. (make sure to add the PortalAlias to the portal before you do this, you can do this on the admin/site settings page as a SUPERUSER (host))

Test to make sure the new URL works

Take the old instance in IIS and convert it to do Redirects to the new URL, you can set it up to pass the existing Path with the new url, which will allow DNN to respond too those old links properly.

You will also want to skim through the content of your site to make sure all your content links to the new URL, instead of the old one.

Chris' advice is the way to go for setting up the physical domains so that your new domain name will transfer to your existing site.  It's important to setup the new portal alias before you switch over however.

You can use the IIS redirect function to transfer over the domain name.  Another good idea is to do a site:ctnation.citizenschools.net search in both google and yahoo to see what Urls have been indexed. You can then go through and click on all the links and make sure you end up where you should (on the new domain).  This will tell you if you have your redirects setup correctly.

I have a blog post on this topic of transferring over domains :  http://www.ifinity.com.au/Blog/Technical_Blog/EntryId/68/Using-Multiple-Domain-Names-on-a-DotNetNuke-site
