I am running into a problem where I am deleting users, but then I can't register to the site with those same usernames.

I have read the Gemini bug report on this issue but it doesn't seem like there's been any decision one way or another on what to do. It doesn't really make any sense to me that a deleted username can't be re-registered.

My only reccomendation to the developers would be to only check non-deleted users on registration, and if it's possible to re-activate a deleted user (not sure if it is or not, never needed to) then check that there isn't an active user with that name. It seems like this would cover the auditing needs of keeping all the users AND the end-user's needs as well.

Is there any plan on changing this behavior or is it just something I should accept?

Thanks.

There are valid reasons for not allowing the name to be reused, mostly dealing with whether that user name is attached to a post or other data and it would now change to the new user with the old name.

The only way I know of to handle this currently is to remove the user from the database directly.  What we really need is a "Purge deleted users" option so the admin can choose whether or not to allow this.
