OK...keeping it short.

Lets say I have a DNN website that has the database stored in the app_data folder rather than within the SQL server itself...how the heck do you back it up without stoping the www publishing service, and without buying something with an open file backup option like backup exec?(probably not possible ehh...that would make sense as to why people would need to buy backup exec or similar product) :->.

Anyhow I love to save money and not buy software if I can find a free solution...any ideas?  The only idea I can come up with is to write a script to shut of the WWW publishing service, copy the files, then restart the service, put it in scheduler to run about 10 minutes before a backup using the windows backup utils.

I"m pretty sure the standard windows backup utils can't do it either.  Now...I remember I found a nifty free command line application that would backup databases stored within SQL...cant remember the name right now...but I think it had to connect to the SQL server instance itself...

Any ideas better stopping services and stuff?

As far as I can see, your strategy is the only promising one for database.mdf accessed in express mode (instead of shooting www publishing service, use "iisreset /stop" and "iisreset /start"), anyhow, from our experiences it is more promising attaching the database in sql server (even express) and script sql server backup.
