My site is set up like this:

  • home
    • page1
    • page2
    • page3
  • search results (don't show in menu)
  • admin
    • admin pages

But, right now, my homepage has a URL like: http://mysite/Home.aspx and the child pages look like: http://mysite/Home/Page2.aspx

Is it recommended to move page1 to the root, and then configure the Home, SearchResults, and Admin pages to not show in the menu navigation? That seems odd for some reason, but I'm interested in what others are doing for a typical setup.

admin menu is not displayed to anonymous users, i.e. they will get "Home" only.

As long as you have 5 or less pages, all should be on root level to allow quick access to all content.
