I've got 2 portals running off the same database (so both run off the same web server with same web config file).

Is it possible to change this set up, so that they each run off their own database?
(it doesn't matter if each db will have duplicate content/files etc)

Is this what needs to be done..?

1. backup database.
2. restore database under a different name for at least ONE of the portals.
3. copy web files from existing web server into a new folder.
4. modify new folder created above with new connection string in web config.
5. go to iis and change the virtual directory to point to new folder.

Is this correct?

thanks,
mark.

yes, that should be fine - however i'd recommend that you just copy the database to your new site and delete the portal -the referential integrity will then remove that portals entries.

is there any reason why i couldn't create my new portal alias to the new server in the database manually AFTER copying the files and the database?

(rather than doing it via the admin area first?)

thanks,
mark.
