So yes, this is an old version, and no, I don't have the option to upgrade it.  :(

So anyway, when you're logged in as an admin and you click on a Text/HTML box with text in it, you get that red line around the border that says you're editing the text.  As soon as we click away from the box, it strips all formatting out of the box, leaving just raw text.  Not even newlines are left.  Is there any way to fix/avoid this?  I've already said "don't click there", but accidental mis-clicks happen, and they impact a production site.

Unfortunately you will likely have to upgrade or modify DNN to stop this. Newer versions of DNN have the ability to turn this functionality off as a setting on the Admin/Site Settings page.

I don't know exactly where you can turn it off, but it would likely be in the desktopmodules/html folder in the ASCX files or codebehind for those.

please be aware, that there are a number of security issues in earlier versions of DotNetNuke, which have been fixed meanwhile. I strongly suggest upgrading to a "secure" version - either DNN 4.9.5 (or even 5.2.3). you should upgrade via DNN 4.6.2 and may follow my upgrade checklist: http://www.deutschnetnuke.de/AboutDotnetNuke/V3V4TippsTricks/Upgradedurchführen.aspx

Thanks guys, that's very helpful.  Such confirmation of what I feared might give my client the impetus to finally discuss bugeting for an upgrade.
