CAPTCHA functionality (also called Security Code) can be enabled in a number of places:
  • The default DNN authentication system can use CAPTCHA . Set via the Admin > Extensions page by editing the Default Authentication options.
  • CAPTCHA can enabled for user registration and enabled for other authentication systems. Set via the Admin > User Accounts moudle by editing the User Account Settings (click the User Settings link)
The following modules also use captcha:

  • Account Login module: Enable Captcha for the DNNAuthentication by editing under the Module Extensions page
  • Blog module: Can be enabled for adding Comments. Set by modifying the Blog Settings of the New_Blog module
  • Feedback module: Enable on the Module Settings page
  • Form & List module: Enable for unauthenticated user on the Module Settings page

If you are unable to see the captcha image after properly enabling Captcha for registration or for those modules which support it AND IF AND ONLY IF your site is running in an ASP.Net 4.0 application pool, you will need to make modifications to web.config to allow Captcha and the LinkClickHandler and other handlers to properly load:

1. Open web.config for editing.
2. Locate the <handlers> section.
3. Within the <handlers> section there are a number of <add nam =" . . ." . . . /> nodes.
4. On all of those which include the following attribute and value

preCondition="integratedMode,runtimeVersionv2.0"

change the value to

preCondition="integratedMode"

5. Re-save and if necessary re-upload the modified web.config file.
