We're upgrading from 4.5 to the latest 5.4 version of DNN. We'd like to be able to set up a QA/development site where we can test new modules, pages, portals, etc. BEFORE we push out to the live site. It should basically work as a mirror site to our live production site, but have the ability to push through only the changes we want. For example, we may have a long-term project in QA/dev which won't go live for several weeks, but we still need to be able to make day-to-day changes to the live site.

Has anyone else done this with DNN?

Spending a lot of time managing additions and rollouts for customers, IMHO, often the best way to do this is to simply add pages that are exposed only to roles that  are part of the production process so they can see all the new functions, and then , when its ready for go live just check the "all users" permission. I think its a hassle to create multiple sites and backup and restore all day... just use DNN the way it was intended and do the new stuff behind a hidden page...or hidden module.  In fact you can even do that at the page level..hide the new module on the public page until its ready for release.

Just backup/restore the live database to your qa server, and backup/restore the files to your qa server.

Write yourself a database script to change the portal aliases from the live values to the qa server values, and have a copy/paste ready to update the database connection strings in the web.config.

After that you should have a working copy of your live site.  Try and match the environmets as closely as possible (ie same IIS version, etc)

I addition to add to the sql script could be to also change the name of the SMTP server to a non existing one to avoid accidental emails escaping when testing.
