I have DNN 5 installed and tunning nicely in a subdirectory of my website. This was done for development purposes. I now want to move it to the root of the site for it to be public. What is the easiest way to do ths? Do I transfer it to local and then transfer it to the root? I do not have direct control of the server, otherwise I would just point the website in iis to the desired folder.

Transferring it local then to the root is probably your best option, though you will need to add the new PortalAlias of the domain, in addition to the domain/FOLDERNAME as it likely is right now. Once you have it running at the new portal alias (domainname) you can remove the old alias.

Yes. Add the new alias before transferring to local. Otherwise you will need to directly access the PortalAlias table of the database to add the new alias outside of the DotNetNuke interface.
