I have DNN 5.4.4 installed on localhost and website folder configured as root site.
I want to know in what scenarios should a portal alias be used? I see that alias "localhost" appears by default. I added an alias "testalias", restarted the application and tried to navigate to http://testalias thinking this would load my localhost site but that didn't happen. Instead I saw a white page with 404 error.

Can anyone please tell me how is portal alias meant to configure and work? Does the IIS requrie any configuration to make Portal Alias work?

Thanks

if you want to use a domain name for your web site, it needs to be added to your name server (locally or public, depending on the situation) or on a local machine, added to windows/system32/drivers/etc/hosts file using a text editor. Besides, if your IIS hosts multiple web sites, you need to route it appropriately to your site using host headers in IP bindings of the IIS web site configuration

Great! Thanks. I added an entry 127.0.0.1    testalias to the hosts file and it works fine.
Later I delete the alias from database and still it worked fine till I restarted the application from Host menu. After restart the site still works but the url that appears in the address bar is http://localhost. So it's a thin line between using Portal Alias and the hosts file. Just a matter of url to display. correct?

Thanks
