I had a user recently have trouble with his account.

He has a host account.  When he logged into our one and only portal, he was unable to see the ContentPane modules.  When bouncing into Edit mode, he was unable to see any modules.

I eventually found that he had the following in the Profile table under the ProfileData field.

<profile><item key="Usability:UserMode1" type="System.String, mscorlib, Version=2.0.0.0, Culture=neutral, PublicKeyToken=b77a5c561934e089"><string>View</string></item><item key="Usability:ContentVisible1" type="System.String, mscorlib, Version=2.0.0.0, Culture=neutral, PublicKeyToken=b77a5c561934e089"><string>False</string></item><item key="Usability:ControlPanelVisible1" type="System.String, mscorlib, Version=2.0.0.0, Culture=neutral, PublicKeyToken=b77a5c561934e089"><string>True</string></item><item key="DotNetNuke.TextEditor:PreferredTextEditor" type="System.String, mscorlib, Version=2.0.0.0, Culture=neutral, PublicKeyToken=b77a5c561934e089"><string>RICH</string></item></profile>

I'm guessing that Usability:ContentVisible1 being False is the guilty party.

But, does anyone know where this setting could have been set from through the user interface so I can track this back to the accident and prevent it in the future?

thats the personalization value that get's set when the user selects the view, edit or layout modes -changes of the mode change that value so when the user returns the controlpanel resets that value and moves into the required mode. Im not sure why it wouldn't be updated when the selection changes.

I found it.  Clicking on the design button in the control panel gets us into this trouble.  I should probably mention version 4.6.0.

Thanks for the tips.

ah, that explains things - there were a few control panel related issues in 4.x, so it must have bee fixed in a later release.
