Right here’s the scenario I have a load balancer with two web servers behind it both with a duplicate installation on dnn, I want to be able to set up a virtual directory in IIS that will link to a folder on storage server to store all the documents uploaded by users of the site. It looks to me that the portals directory is where the uploads will go so I’ve created a virtual directory in IIS and it called portals and placed all the files from the original portals folder into the new virtual one.  This is all fine IIS recognises it and it all works but whenever I go to the site it always creates a new portals folder locally as if it’s not recognising the virtual one I uploads to the virtual one but does not seem to function entirely correctly. Can anyone help with my problem or recommend a better method.

Many thanks in advance,

James

This is not a supported scenario - we do support running the whole website on a shared server (i.e. via UNC) - please see http://www.enterdnn.com/Share/tabid/57/EntryId/2/DotNetNuke-and-Webfarm-Support.aspx for an example of setting up IIS to point to a UNC share.

Thanks for your reply, I have been doing some reading and it appears that it is not really possible to set up a web farm without using a 3rd party Caching provider in the community edition. At the moment I am not in the postion to purchase the professional edition so I would like to know if for the time being if my two identical dotnetnuke sites were set up on two seperate webservers behnind a load balancer and none of the content was changed would this present any problems? also would it presnt any problems if just text was being edited? i would assume that all these changes would be stored in the database. Many thanks, James

Hello, no, this would not be supported. DotNetNuke makes agressive use of the cache to allow it to perform approriately. This cache must be kept syncronised across any machines in a webfarm. You can use the filebasedcaching provider which is free in the CE edition to perform this cache synronisation(there is also a databasebasedcaching provider which is deprecated as it could cause more problems than it solved). The webbased caching provider in the professional edition is a better solution as it requires much less setup and the "nodes" are independant i.e. there is no single point of failure such as a shared network drive.
